Laboratory Coordinator

Position description:

Calico is seeking an exceptional and experienced Laboratory Coordinator, who will work within the Facilities and Operations group. The candidate will work closely with research groups, scientists, and other functional groups at Calico.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Personnel management:
    • Train and mentor personnel on the Operations team, including Lab Assistants
    • Coordinate external Operations contractors and determine resources when needed
  • Lab management, including oversight of shared lab areas and equipment
  • Lab equipment management:
    • Coordinate repairs and preventative maintenance with vendors
    • Schedule installation of new lab equipment
    • Oversee purchasing service contracts
    • Manage asset tag system for incoming equipment
    • Manage pipette inventory
    • Coordinate onsite annual pipette calibrations
  • Chemical/Biological Safety:
    • Assist EHS with chemical and biological hazard mitigation and waste handling in accordance with state & local requirements
    • Assist EHS with implementation and management of lab safety programs
  • Lab services management:
    • Coordination of onsite stockrooms (including vendor management)
    • Orientation and onboarding for all new research employees
    • Management of purchase orders and invoices for operational services
  • Strategic planning for future needs and processes
  • Involvement in cross functional roles within facilities and lab operations department
  • Intellectual property management:
    • Ownership of the laboratory notebook processes and systems
  • Project management:
    • Manage new and ongoing cross-team projects within Facilities, Operations, and other functional groups

Position requirements:

  • 2+ years experience in Operations in a laboratory environment, prior people/team management preferred
  • Great communication skills (written and verbal) and strong team player
  • Ability to balance a broad range of organizational needs with appropriate attention to detail and focus on assigned tasks
  • Ability to handle Operations issues in a fast-paced environment with a customer-focused attitude
